Erectile Dysfunction

Glossary entry · Last updated: 21 August 2026

Definition

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is the persistent inability to achieve or maintain an erection sufficient for satisfactory sexual performance. It can have vascular, neurological, hormonal, psychological, medication-related, or lifestyle causes, and often involves more than one factor.

Why It Matters in This Context

Pelvic floor muscle training has been studied as a conservative intervention for some men with ED. Randomized work (notably Dorey and colleagues) has shown that structured pelvic floor exercises can improve erectile function scores in a meaningful proportion of participants. The proposed mechanisms include better venous occlusion (helping maintain rigidity) and improved neuromuscular control.

Pelvic floor training is not a universal cure and does not address all causes of ED. Men with cardiovascular risk factors, sudden onset, or other concerning symptoms should seek medical evaluation.
